General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

The doctor chooses acne treatment according to age, the appearance and extent of lesions, how long they have been present and treatments already tried. The effect on quality of life also matters.

Initial results may take several weeks. Ameli describes assessing initial treatment after three months; ask when your own review is due.

Use prescribed creams or gels regularly. Improvement does not always mean treatment should stop: discuss it with your doctor, since stopping too early can allow lesions to return. If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy, follow the specific retinoid advice below.

If your skin becomes irritated, speak to your doctor, who can suggest a suitable solution. Pregnancy and pregnancy planning require a separate response: topical retinoids are contraindicated. If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, do not apply them again and contact your prescriber promptly. The ADAPALENE TEVA leaflet says to stop treatment and inform the doctor immediately if pregnancy occurs during use.

Clean skin gently with a mild product and avoid alcohol-based or harsh products. Do not squeeze spots. Protect yourself from the sun, which can promote pigmented marks.

For the review, note how long you have used the treatment, difficulties applying it and any irritation. If acne spreads, leaves scars or affects your mental wellbeing, seek medical advice without waiting for a prevention appointment.
