Moderate activity: how can conversation help you judge the effort?

Duration is only part of the picture: breathing and ease of conversation help describe the intensity of a familiar activity.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

A recommendation mentions moderate activity, but your watch mainly displays minutes or steps. Intensity also describes how hard your body is working. To understand the term, notice your breathing and how easy conversation feels during a familiar activity.

At moderate intensity, breathing becomes slightly faster while conversation remains possible. At light intensity, breathing stays almost normal and talking is possible too. Being able to talk, on its own, therefore does not distinguish these two levels.

At high intensity, breathing becomes faster and conversation is difficult, with short sentences. This contrast helps explain recommendations. It does not mean you should push yourself until you cannot talk simply to test the distinction.

The activity’s name does not tell the whole story: a slow walk and a brisk walk involve different effort. Describe pace and terrain as well as duration, rather than putting every walk into the same category.

Assurance Maladie recommends starting gently and gradually increasing duration or intensity. If you are starting out, begin with what you currently do; the conversation guide helps describe your activity rather than requiring an immediate increase in effort.

For a prevention discussion, prepare one concrete example: activity, duration, pace and ability to talk. This guide does not assess medical fitness or explain new or unusual breathlessness: contact your doctor without delay.
