Needles and lancets at home: how do you use a DASTRI box?

Sharps from self-treatment follow a dedicated process separate from unused medicines.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

A needle or lancet is not sorted like an unused medicine pack. Sharps from eligible self-treatment can cause injury and belong in the DASTRI process.

DASTRI states that pharmacies supply yellow boxes with green lids free of charge on presentation of a prescription or when buying an eligible self-test. Ask which container fits your device.

Pen needles, syringes and lancets are among the accepted objects, including protected needles. Cotton, dressings and test strips do not belong in this box. Sorting depends on the exact equipment, not simply on whether it was used for care.

During use, close the box temporarily and respect its marked fill limit. When that limit is reached or treatment ends, activate permanent closure following the container instructions.

Return the closed box to a collection point. Electronic medical devices follow the dedicated process specified by DASTRI, using a purple container; do not automatically mix them with ordinary needles.

Waste produced by a health professional has a separate process. If unsure about an object, ask for sorting to be checked. Keep unused medicines separate, as described in our article about returning them.
