General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.
Cluster headache causes extremely painful attacks on one side, around the eye, forehead or temple.
Attacks typically last fifteen minutes to three hours. The eye may redden and water, with a blocked nose on that side.
Medical diagnosis is needed: glaucoma and other conditions can also cause pain around the eye.
Attack treatment may use mask oxygen or prescribed subcutaneous sumatriptan. It must not be improvised using personal equipment.
For repeated attacks, the doctor may propose a specific preventive treatment. Ask for a plan covering future episodes.
A new explosive or unusual headache needs urgent assessment. Do not automatically attribute it to previously diagnosed cluster headache.
