Food dates: use-by, best-before or instructions after opening?

The date type and whether the packaging has been opened change how it should be read. Check the wording first.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

“À consommer jusqu’au” indicates a French use-by date, or DLC. Do not exceed this limit for highly perishable foods.

“À consommer de préférence avant” indicates a best-before date, or DDM. It concerns preservation of the product’s qualities.

Passing a best-before date does not automatically make food dangerous. This distinction requires intact packaging and does not validate a spoiled product.

A use-by date assumes the storage instructions were followed. A break in the cold chain can make food dangerous before that date.

After opening, follow the period and conditions stated for the opened product. The date printed for unopened packaging is no longer sufficient.

Before storing or serving, read the date type, storage conditions and instructions after opening together. Do not invent extra storage time.
