Confirmed dust mite allergy: what should you change in the bedroom and bedding?

After diagnosis, focus changes on the bedroom, textiles and bedding. These measures complement treatment; they do not address an asthma attack.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Severe difficulty breathing, blue lips, difficulty speaking or walking, or confusion during an asthma attack are emergency signs. In France, call 15 or 112. Changing the bedroom does not address a severe attack.

Dust mite measures depend on the allergen identified by the doctor and, when needed, an allergy assessment. Reducing exposure complements medical treatment. It does not justify changing prescribed treatment on your own.

Focus efforts on the bedroom. Ameli advises removing fitted carpets, rugs, soft toys and upholstered furniture; limiting these textiles reduces places where dust and mites may be present.

For bedding, Ameli mentions dust mite covers and regularly washing sheets and blankets at 60 °C. Its allergic asthma page also advises synthetic duvets and pillows. These changes do not guarantee that symptoms will disappear.

Vacuum regularly, preferably with a vacuum cleaner fitted with a HEPA filter, and dust furniture with a damp cloth. These actions aim to reduce allergens in the bedroom environment.

Air the bedroom to reduce humidity and avoid drying laundry there. Note changes you can make and difficulties to discuss with the professional managing your allergy. Medical follow-up remains necessary even after adapting the bedding.
