General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Abdominal pain with high fever and jaundice can indicate cholangitis, an acute infection of a bile duct. French health insurance advises urgent hospital care.

The bile ducts carry bile made by the liver. A stone can leave the gallbladder and obstruct the main bile duct; associated infection is a serious complication.

These symptoms can have other causes too: only a medical assessment can establish what is happening. Do not delay assessment while trying to confirm a diagnosis yourself.

In hospital the team assesses the situation and treats the infection with antibiotics. It also looks for an obstruction and chooses any needed intervention based on the findings.

In some situations, especially with a severe narrowing, endoscopic treatment may be needed to restore flow. The team explains why it is indicated and its risks.

If these signs occur together, call 15 or 112 immediately in France to arrange urgent help. Describe the symptoms, when they began and any biliary history; do not substitute a prevention appointment for this call.
