Antibiogram: does ‘susceptible’ describe the bacterium or my allergy?

An antibiogram tests a bacterium against antibiotics. It does not replace an allergy workup: ask for the result to be explained and report your reactions separately.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

If a report describes a bacterium as ‘susceptible’ to an antibiotic, it describes the bacterium tested. The word does not describe your personal sensitivity to the medicine and does not mean that you are allergic, or that every allergy has been ruled out.

In a urine culture test, called ECBU in France, the laboratory grows, detects and identifies bacteria. If a bacterium is identified, an antibiogram tests its susceptibility to different antibiotics. This result helps the doctor guide prescribing for the infection concerned.

An allergy workup asks a different question: has a substance caused a reaction in the person? The doctor uses the circumstances and symptoms to decide which examinations are appropriate. Interpretation takes clinical history into account; an antibiogram does not perform this workup.

The microbiology result also needs the context of the examination. Tell the prescriber about your symptoms and any recent or current antibiotic treatment. These details help interpretation: a list of antibiotics on a report is not a prescription for you to choose from yourself.

If you previously reacted to an antibiotic, report that separately even if the bacterium is described as susceptible. Give the medicine’s name, the symptoms observed and any available medical conclusions. The professional can decide whether the suspected allergy needs clarification.

Give the complete report to the doctor and ask how the result changes care and follow-up. Do not test tolerance yourself by taking a medicine again: any diagnostic re-exposure belongs to a medically supervised workup.
