Liquid antibiotic prepared from powder: what changes after mixing?

Once powder is mixed with water, specific instructions apply. Preparation date, shaking and storage depend on the exact bottle.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Powder for an oral suspension becomes the liquid to administer after water is added as its leaflet describes. The three cited leaflets distinguish dry powder from the prepared suspension. Instructions after mixing therefore concern a changed state of the product.

Preparation markings are not interchangeable. The AMOXICILLINE BIOGARAN leaflet uses a level on the bottle; the AMOXICILLINE VIATRIS SANTE leaflet also describes a supplied measuring cup. Ask to be shown the markings for your presentation instead of improvising the water volume.

The leaflets require thorough shaking before each use and specify the supplied administration device. The weight-marked oral syringe supplied with the cited BGR formulation is specific to that product and must not be used for another medicine.

The same antibiotic does not guarantee identical storage. The two cited amoxicillin leaflets allow 14 days after preparation, but BIOGARAN specifies below 25 °C and VIATRIS SANTE refrigeration between 2 and 8 °C. These examples do not apply to other bottles.

The BGR leaflet for amoxicillin with clavulanic acid allows a maximum of 7 days between 2 and 8 °C after mixing. Recording the preparation date helps establish that limit. The printed expiry date must also be checked.

The BIOGARAN leaflet excludes use when visible deterioration occurs; the BGR leaflet also describes abnormal colour after preparation. Discuss doubts about appearance or preparation with a pharmacist. Storage life does not define the prescribed treatment duration.
