General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

An antibiotic acts against bacteria. It does not speed recovery from a viral infection such as a cold. Having received an antibiotic during an earlier illness does not show what is appropriate today.

Symptoms can look similar while their cause or the situation differs. A professional can assess the need for treatment; a personal impression is not enough to choose an old prescription.

French Health Insurance advises against reusing leftover antibiotics without medical advice, even when symptoms seem identical. Do not use another person's treatment or share your own.

When an antibiotic is prescribed, follow the stated dose, timing and duration. Discuss difficulty taking it, a missed dose or a suspected side effect with a professional; do not change treatment to suit what remains in the pack.

Inappropriate use helps resistant bacteria emerge. Antibiotic resistance concerns bacteria, not a person who has become used to a medicine. It can make future infections harder to treat.

When seeking advice, prepare the name of medicine already taken and the previous prescription if available. Leftovers belong in the dedicated medicine-return process already described on this site; they are not a reserve for a future infection.
