Anticoagulants: report bleeding and prepare useful information

Bleeding during anticoagulant treatment needs appropriate advice. The medicine name, last dose and symptoms help describe the situation.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Anticoagulants reduce the risk of certain blood clots but also increase bleeding risk. Follow medical monitoring and the instructions specific to the medicine.

Promptly tell a doctor about unusual bleeding. An apparently small amount does not by itself rule out a problem during treatment; describe where, when and how it occurs.

Heavy bleeding with faintness, pallor or worsening general condition is an emergency: call 15 or 112 in France. Do not wait for a pharmacy appointment before seeking help.

Prepare the exact anticoagulant name, the last dose and other medicines used recently. Also mention an impact or fall, even without a visible wound, and any monitoring results available.

Tell every professional before dental work or another procedure that may cause bleeding. Do not decide to interrupt an anticoagulant yourself; a doctor must organise any necessary interruption.

At the next review, ask which signs to report and whom to contact according to severity. Keep these instructions accessible without applying another anticoagulant’s monitoring schedule to yours.
