Appendicectomy: why keep follow-up after returning home?

Removing the appendix does not end monitoring. Tissue results, symptom changes and resuming activities still need clarification.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Appendicectomy removes an infected appendix. Same-day return is possible in selected circumstances, but depends on the procedure and subsequent recovery.

Appendicitis diagnosis combines clinical findings and tests. New abdominal pain should therefore not be labelled appendicitis on its own.

The removed appendix is sent for tissue examination. This confirms the diagnosis and checks for another possible cause; ask how the result will reach you.

After discharge, report fever, vomiting, persistent or returning pain and any wound abnormality. Calf pain also deserves medical advice.

If antibiotics or clot prevention are prescribed, follow the plan provided. Complicated appendicitis does not have the same aftercare as an uncomplicated episode.

Keep the follow-up appointment and clarify return to school, work and sport. Timing depends on the operation, complications and your activities.
