General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.
Presbycusis is gradual hearing loss associated with ageing. Understanding speech in noise may become difficult before conversations in quiet settings are affected.
Describe difficult situations and their progression to the doctor. Do not assume age explains everything: assessment looks for the cause of hearing loss.
The doctor may refer you to an ENT specialist. They examine the ears and eardrums; abnormalities or an earwax blockage can also contribute.
Audiometry measures hearing, and some tests examine understanding of words. A screening questionnaire or application does not replace professional assessment.
Sudden or rapidly developing hearing loss, a head injury, or persistent loss after intense noise trauma requires urgent hospital assessment.
If hearing loss comes with ear pain, fever above 38.5 °C, discharge or dizziness, consult the same day. Do not wait for a prevention appointment.
