Bathing a baby: how can you prevent scalds from hot water or a hot tap?

Prepare supplies, mix the water, check with a thermometer that it is no warmer than 37°C and cool the tap. Supervision must continue throughout the bath.

Hot liquids are a common cause of burns in children. If a child under five has already been burned, call 15 or 112 in France. The steps below are for preparing the bath and must not delay care for a burn.

Before filling the bath, prepare everything you need within reach. This lets you stay with the baby throughout the bath without having to fetch an item from another room.

Run cold water first, then hot water. Briefly run cold water again to cool the tap. Mix the bath water and check its temperature with a thermometer: it must not exceed 37°C.

Never run water while the baby is in the bath. Mix and check the water before placing the baby in it. A child left alone can also turn on the hot tap: the tap remains something to watch.

Keep the baby supervised throughout the bath. Being able to sit or being placed in a bath seat does not make it safe to leave the baby alone, even for a moment.

If you need to leave the room, take the baby with you. A brief interruption does not change this advice. Preparing supplies, checking the water and the adult’s continuous presence work together to make the bath safer.
