Bipolar disorder: when should renewed energy be discussed?

With diagnosed bipolar disorder, sleep, energy and new projects can provide clues to discuss with your care team, even when you feel well.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

These pointers concern already diagnosed bipolar disorder. An unusual increase in energy, optimism or the number of new projects may signal another phase. A change in sleep also deserves discussion with your care team.

A period of hypomania may feel like a period of high performance. That feeling does not establish that follow-up is no longer needed. Bipolar disorder can also include intervals when mood returns to its usual state.

Note changes in mood and sleep to discuss them early. With your agreement, someone close to you may share what they have noticed. These observations support a conversation and do not replace assessment by your care team.

Psychoeducation provides structured information about the illness and treatments. Ask your team what it can teach you about recognising changes and reporting unwanted effects. The discussion can include people close to you with your agreement.

Keep planned appointments and monitoring tests even when you feel well. Do not change treatment yourself. Monitoring depends on the medicine; lithium, for example, requires blood checks prescribed by the doctor as part of follow-up.

For suicidal thoughts, France’s free 3114 service is available day and night. For imminent suicide risk, call 15 or 112 in France. Mon bilan prévention does not replace this urgent route to help.
