General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

A feeling of dry mouth does not always correspond to a measurable reduction in saliva. It can still affect chewing, swallowing, taste or the comfort of dental appliances. If it persists or interferes with meals, describe its impact to the doctor. Both the sensation and its consequences deserve assessment.

Saliva lubricates the mouth, helps with speaking and swallowing, and protects teeth and gums. A lack of saliva can contribute to tooth decay, gum disease or infections in the mouth. It can also reduce food intake. Assessment therefore concerns both comfort during meals and oral health.

There are various possible causes, including dehydration, some medicines and certain illnesses. The doctor examines the mouth, assesses the difficulty and reviews the treatments taken. Bring information about your medicines and medical history to that discussion. A possible cause named in a list is not a diagnosis for you.

Depending on the examination and your situation, the doctor may request a saliva measurement or other investigations. Not everyone needs all these examinations. Explain changes in meals, your ability to chew or swallow and, where relevant, your weight. This information helps guide assessment of the cause and its effects.

The dentist assesses teeth and gums and explains oral hygiene suited to your mouth. Bring your prescriptions and any dental appliances to the appointment. Discuss difficulties with chewing, swallowing or speaking. This follow-up complements the doctor’s investigation of the cause.

Persistent dryness must be distinguished from acute dehydration. A very dry mouth and tongue with severe weakness, disorientation or altered consciousness can occur with severe dehydration: call 15 or 112. Urgent care takes priority over assessment of dry mouth or a prevention appointment.
