General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.
In France, call 15 or 112 without delay if your baby takes less than half their bottle at three consecutive feeds, cannot breastfeed, repeatedly vomits, seems floppy, has concerning breathing or blue lips. With bronchiolitis symptoms, Ameli also gives this urgent route before two months of age, after birth before 36 weeks of gestation, or with a heart or lung condition, immune deficiency or a disability preventing effective coughing.
A cold followed by cough, faster or wheezing breathing and feeding difficulties may suggest bronchiolitis. A medical examination is essential. For a baby over two months who remains generally well and continues feeding, contact the doctor without waiting for an examination that same day.
The doctor assesses age, health and severity. Diagnosis is based on examination; a chest X-ray is not routine for an uncomplicated first episode. Not having this test therefore does not mean the situation has not been assessed.
After assessment, follow feeding instructions and continue the usual milk, offering smaller divided feeds if your baby tires. Keep the baby upright only while awake. For sleep, continue placing them on their back; the waking position is not a sleeping instruction.
Watch particularly closely during the first two to three days, without waiting that long if the baby deteriorates. Worsening symptoms, or increasing fever with thicker airway secretions, require another medical consultation that same day. The urgent signs described above still take priority.
A professional can explain clearing the nose before feeds; ask for an appropriate demonstration. Do not improvise cough medicines or mucus-thinning products. Chest physiotherapy is not routinely recommended for a first episode; any exception is for the doctor to assess. A prevention discussion does not replace this care.
