General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.
Persistent or worsening tingling, or progressive loss of hand sensation or strength, requires prompt medical advice. Do not extend a splint trial yourself while waiting for the next review.
In carpal tunnel syndrome, the median nerve is compressed at the wrist. Symptoms can affect the thumb, index and middle fingers and part of the ring finger; their presence alone does not establish the diagnosis.
Without signs of severity, the doctor may propose medical treatment. A removable splint holds the wrist in a neutral position to relieve night-time symptoms. It is generally worn at night for about three months.
Ask how to put the splint on, how long to wear it in your case and whom to contact if it causes discomfort or symptoms persist. The general duration does not replace your own instructions.
Repeated movements, wrist twisting, forceful gripping or vibration can contribute to symptoms. Describe the relevant tasks at work and during leisure to discuss possible adaptations.
If medical treatment fails or signs are severe, surgery may be considered. At follow-up describe night waking, sensation and grip strength; the doctor decides on next steps using the whole assessment.
