Primary sclerosing cholangitis: why check the colon too?

This bile duct disease may be associated with bowel inflammation. Liver follow-up and colon assessment answer different questions.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Primary sclerosing cholangitis is a rare chronic disease of the bile ducts. Its course varies and requires specialist follow-up tailored to each person.

It can be associated with inflammatory bowel disease. The reference protocol calls for a colonoscopy to look for this association even without digestive symptoms.

If bowel inflammation is associated, colon surveillance matters because colorectal cancer risk is increased. The specialist sets the schedule and explains any biopsies.

Bile duct follow-up answers a different question. Depending on severity and the specialist’s plan, it may include liver blood tests and imaging of the bile ducts and gallbladder.

Report new jaundice, pain, fever or itching to your doctor. Do not automatically attribute these changes to a known bowel flare. If abdominal pain, high fever and jaundice occur together, call 15 or 112 in France: this combination can be an emergency requiring hospital care.

Ask who coordinates liver and bowel follow-up, which examinations are planned and how to obtain the results. Your regular doctor and specialist can organise this pathway together.
