General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.
An already prescribed colonoscopy lets the gastroenterologist examine the inside of the colon. If needed, samples can be taken or treatment such as removing a polyp can be performed during the examination.
The quality of bowel preparation affects the reliability of the examination, polyp detection and whether it is complete. Ask why following the preparation instructions matters in your case.
Ask for clear explanations of the prescribed food instructions and bowel preparation product, then follow those individual instructions. Clarify the schedule and how to take the preparation before the examination.
At the anaesthetic consultation, report all your medicines, allergies and health conditions. Clarify the fasting instructions and the instructions for your medicines before making any change to how you take them.
Arrange to go home with a relative or friend: accompaniment is compulsory after anaesthesia. Driving a vehicle is prohibited on the procedure day; confirm these arrangements with the team.
Ask how you will receive the examination report and any sample results, and obtain the contact provided on discharge. After the examination, seek medical advice promptly or call that contact for any unusual symptom, including abdominal pain, red blood, unusually black stools or fever.
