Carer’s leave allows an employee to suspend work temporarily to help an older person, a disabled person or someone who has lost independence. Conditions include the relationship with the person helped and their stable, regular residence in France.
The employee initiates the request. Check the applicable agreement for arrangements and duration; where no collective provisions apply, the maximum is three months, renewable within a limit of one year over the employee’s career.
The request states the intention to suspend the employment contract and the departure date, and any wish to split the leave or take it part-time. Prepare the declarations and supporting documents relevant to the person helped.
The notice period follows the applicable collective agreement; without such provisions, the request is sent at least one month before departure. Leave starts without delay for sudden health deterioration or a crisis requiring urgent action, either certified by a doctor, or an abrupt end to accommodation certified by the facility’s manager.
The employer does not pay for the leave unless a collective provision provides otherwise. A daily carer’s allowance, AJPA, may be requested subject to conditions: this is a separate application to the Caf or MSA according to the scheme.
Before submitting the request, check the documents and arrangements with your employer and the relevant fund. General information does not confirm an individual award of leave or allowance.
