Pertussis: review your vaccination before caring for a young baby

Parents and people with close, sustained contact with a baby: prepare your last vaccination date for appropriate advice about pertussis.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Pertussis can be especially serious for very young babies. An adult can pass it to them: if you will regularly care for a baby, review your vaccination rather than relying only on a memory of an old vaccination.

Protection after vaccination or a previous episode of pertussis does not last for life. Find the date of your most recent vaccination and ask a healthcare professional how it relates to your present circumstances.

Vaccination during each pregnancy helps protect the newborn through maternal antibodies. It should be discussed with the professional following the pregnancy; advice for close contacts does not replace that care or its individual assessment.

If the mother was not vaccinated during pregnancy, or was vaccinated less than a month before birth, vaccination of the baby’s close, sustained contacts during its first six months should be reviewed. A professional considers the dates and family circumstances.

For an adult’s cough or contact with a pertussis case, seek medical advice. A coughing baby under three months needs urgent medical review. Breathing pauses, blue colouring or severe breathing difficulty require an immediate call to 15 or 112 in France; do not wait for a prevention conversation.

The Mon bilan prévention page can guide general questions under its conditions. This conversation does not replace care for the baby, pregnancy follow-up or infection.

Flu and Covid-19: the 2026–2027 campaign

The national flu and Covid-19 vaccination campaign starts on 13 October 2026. In Doctolib, choose “Vaccination antigrippale (Grippe)” or “Vaccination COVID-19” for the vaccination you want to discuss.

Bring your carte Vitale and, for flu, your coverage voucher if you have one. The professional checks the recommendations and coverage conditions that apply to you.

The pharmacy checks whether vaccination and coverage apply based on the vaccine, your age and your circumstances.
