General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.
Use only containers intended for food contact and for the planned purpose. Chemicals may move from the material into the meal, including under the effects of heat or cold. A container intended for storage is therefore not automatically intended for heating.
The glass-and-fork symbol indicates suitability for food contact. It may be absent from an item obviously intended for food, such as a saucepan or cutlery. Microwave use and permitted temperatures have separate indications: the food-contact symbol alone does not establish them.
Read and keep the instructions: maximum temperature, contact time, suitable foods and single or repeated use. For cling film, specifically check microwave use and contact with fatty foods. The manufacturer’s intended conditions matter as much as the material.
Do not reuse single-use packaging to store or heat another meal. An ice-cream tub or water bottle has not been assessed for every other food, particularly acidic or fatty foods, or for other conditions such as heating or freezing.
Do not cook or reheat food directly in its packaging unless the instructions permit that use. DGCCRF specifies not reheating it directly in multilayer cardboard-and-aluminium cartons. Check permission for heating before leaving the meal in its packaging.
When making an oven-baked foil parcel, do not use aluminium foil in contact with acidic foods such as lemon. Combining acidic food and a high temperature can cause aluminium to migrate into the meal. This precaution concerns that particular cooking method.
