General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.
A prescribed cystoscopy looks inside the bladder and urethra. The urologist passes a thin, flexible tube with a camera through the urethra. The diagnostic examination described by Ameli takes place under local anaesthesia.
The camera looks for abnormalities of the lining, such as a stone or a lesion. A cystoscopy referral therefore does not itself mean cancer. Ask which question the doctor wants to answer in your assessment.
Ultrasound and cystoscopy provide different information. In the assessment described for suspected bladder cancer, a normal ultrasound may be followed by cystoscopy. Do not cancel the examination yourself because of that result.
Transurethral resection is an operation that removes suspicious tissue through the urethra. It takes place under general or regional anaesthesia. If ultrasound strongly suggests a tumour, resection may replace simple cystoscopy from the outset.
Microscopic examination of the removed tissue helps establish its nature and whether muscle is affected. Clarify which procedure is planned, whether tissue will be taken and how the report will be explained. The camera view and tissue examination have different roles.
Visible blood in the urine requires a medical consultation, even if intermittent and without fever. There are several possible causes. Tell the doctor without waiting for a prevention appointment; then ask for instructions specific to your planned examination.
