Prescribed peak-flow monitoring: why keep your reference value?

Connect a breathing measurement to its reference, the technique taught and your symptoms to understand monitoring already proposed by your doctor.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

New breathlessness without signs of respiratory distress needs medical advice the same day. In France, call 15 or 112 immediately if breathing difficulty prevents you from finishing sentences or comes with bluish lips or changes in alertness. Do not delay the call to repeat a breathing measurement.

A peak-flow meter is a small portable device that measures the maximum airflow during a forced breath out. The result, called peak expiratory flow or PEF, is expressed in litres per minute. It contributes to assessing airway obstruction during asthma follow-up.

A doctor proposes this self-monitoring for selected people or situations. Ameli lists severe asthma, difficulty noticing symptoms, a change of treatment or follow-up after a serious attack among its uses. Clarify the purpose and the monitoring period chosen for your care.

The measurement is compared with a reference. This can be a predicted value based on age, sex and height, or your personal PEF measured during a period of good asthma control. Ask which reference your doctor has recorded in the instructions so that the comparison is clear.

Technique matters for the record. Ameli describes three consecutive attempts, with the best value recorded. Asthma education can teach correct device use and interpretation of breathing measurements. Ask for the technique you were taught to be checked before discussing a change in the record.

A follow-up diary can bring together measurements, symptoms and the circumstances of episodes. In some cases, the doctor also includes PEF values in the written action plan. Ask how they relate to the instructions already arranged and to situations requiring medical help.
