General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.
An inconclusive newborn hearing test does not establish the type or severity of possible hearing loss. It identifies a need for specialist assessment.
After an inconclusive first result, a second test is offered before discharge. Ask which result was recorded in the child’s health record.
If the second test remains inconclusive, contact the maternity team about referral. With your agreement, it arranges an appointment within one month.
Further examinations must take place before the end of the third month. Contact the team promptly if no appointment has been arranged.
Bring the results and mention absent responses to sounds or developmental concerns. Hearing follow-up continues after the initial screen.
Keep the hearing checks included in follow-up at 4, 9 and 24 months too. These remain necessary whatever the results of the newborn hearing screen.
