Peritoneal dialysis at home: what must you learn before starting?

Having a catheter alone does not ensure independence. Connections, exchanges, possible assistance and supply storage need preparation.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Peritoneal dialysis uses the abdominal lining as a filter. Sterile fluid enters and leaves through a catheter; repeated blood needle insertion is not involved.

Connections require strict hygiene to reduce infection risk. Specific training is necessary before performing the procedures at home.

Exchanges may be manual during the day or automated overnight by a cycler. The prescribed schedule follows individual needs rather than an online example.

Independence may be complete or supported by a nurse or trained relative. Describe difficulties with vision, handling or organisation so suitable assistance can be prepared.

Plan storage space for fluid bags and daily handling. Travel also needs advance discussion with the team to organise supplies and treatment.

Before going home, have your technique checked and record contacts for medical or technical problems. Catheter placement and training are complementary parts of the same treatment.
