Living kidney donation: what should be checked before consent?

Wanting to help a loved one begins a medical and legal pathway. Donor assessment, information and revocable consent remain separate steps.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

A living person may donate a kidney to a close person within French law. Volunteering alone does not establish that donation is medically possible.

The team assesses both donor and recipient. Ask for an explanation of your own risks, personal consequences and expected results for your loved one.

An expert committee checks particularly that the choice is free and its implications understood. The hospital explains how to arrange this meeting.

In the usual pathway, written consent is recorded before a magistrate. You may change your decision at any time; the initial wish is not irreversible.

Where there is incompatibility, paired donation may sometimes be considered within the legal framework. The transplant team must organise this possibility.

Ask for a timetable covering assessment, consent and follow-up after donation. Also clarify reimbursement arrangements and the supporting documents required.
