General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.
Heart Doppler ultrasound combines ultrasound images with assessment of blood flow. It shows the heart’s chambers, valves and movements. When it is prescribed, first ask which approach is planned: the route of examination determines which explanations and preparation need to be clarified.
For a transthoracic echocardiogram, the probe moves over the chest with gel. You lie down, usually on your left side. The doctor may ask you to change position or briefly hold your breath to obtain images; follow their instructions during the examination.
Prepare the prescription, the referring doctor’s letter and results of previous heart examinations, including available echocardiograms or ECGs. The doctor also asks about your health problems and current or previous treatments. Provide their exact names to prepare this discussion.
For a transoesophageal echocardiogram, a probe attached to a flexible tube is introduced through the mouth into the oesophagus. This position behind the heart provides clearer images of certain structures, including the mitral valve. Confirm this approach rather than assume an external probe will be used.
A transoesophageal examination requires fasting. It involves local anaesthesia of the throat or sometimes sedation. Ask the team for the exact eating instructions and arrangements for this examination. Do not apply the preparation for an ultrasound performed on the skin to this approach through the oesophagus.
After heart Doppler ultrasound, the doctor interprets and explains the results and provides a written report that is also sent to the referring doctor. Keep it with earlier examinations and ask which question in your assessment it helps answer. Further tests may be decided according to the results; they are not automatic.
