General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.
A dark shadow at the edge of your vision, a black curtain or reduced vision in one eye needs an ophthalmology examination the same day. Contact an ophthalmologist or an eye emergency department without waiting for your next check-up.
Retinal detachment can occur without pain or redness. The absence of pain therefore does not provide reassurance when part of your visual field disappears.
New flashes or new or increasing floaters also need to be reported. Contact the ophthalmologist to establish the timing; Ameli describes examination within the following days when there is no reduced vision or dark curtain.
These signs cannot establish a diagnosis on their own. Examination of the back of the eye looks for a retinal tear or detachment; vision and eye pressure are also assessed.
Myopia, previous eye surgery or an eye injury can increase the risk. Having none of these does not rule out detachment; report any new visual change.
When contacting the service, give the onset time, affected eye, any shadow and any loss of vision. Clarify where and when to be examined; if a dark curtain or reduced vision subsequently develops, seek care the same day.
