General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

In a child with eczema, fever together with a poor general condition requires prompt medical advice, even if the skin lesions have not visibly worsened. Fever, poor general condition and worsening lesions together can indicate a serious infection, including herpes: urgent medical assessment is needed.

A cold sore accompanied by eye pain, a red eye or sensitivity to light requires medical assessment the same day. If these signs accompany fever and worsening eczema in a child, urgent assessment takes priority.

Atopic eczema is a chronic, non-contagious inflammation that occurs in flares. The virus causing a cold sore, however, can cause a serious infection in affected skin, particularly during a flare.

Avoid close contact between a child with atopic eczema and someone with a cold sore: no kissing or sharing cutlery with that person. This precaution complements prescribed eczema care.

Scratching can also damage patches and encourage bacterial infection such as impetigo. Trim nails regularly and avoid touching the lesions. Pustules or unusual crusts despite treatment warrant prompt medical advice.

When contacting the doctor, describe when fever and worsening began, the child’s general condition and the changes seen. Mention recent contact with a cold sore if relevant, without trying to determine the cause yourself.
