General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.
One sudden sign can indicate stroke: limb or facial weakness or numbness, facial drooping, difficulty speaking, understanding, reading or writing, loss of vision or double vision, loss of balance, or a sudden severe unusual headache. For any one of these, call 15 or 112 immediately in France, even if it disappears.
An electroneuromyogram, also called ENMG or EMG, is requested in some situations to study how nerves and muscles function. The team considers it alongside the history of symptoms and the clinical examination.
It may involve stimulating selected nerves and recording the activity produced by muscles. Sensors and small needles used as electrodes may be involved: ask the professional to explain the steps planned for you.
For example, when carpal tunnel syndrome is suspected, the doctor may request the test to measure transmission in the median nerve and compare both hands. It complements the clinical examination when considered useful or before surgery.
In diabetes follow-up, a doctor may also request an EMG when needed to assess nerve and muscle function. This examination is not automatic: the choice depends on the individual situation and assessment already performed.
Before the appointment, prepare questions about the procedure and the service’s own instructions. Afterwards, ask who will receive the report, how the results will be explained and what the next step in your follow-up is.
