When bowel involvement is suspected, imaging can map lesions before a possible operation is discussed.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Deep endometriosis can affect nearby organs, including the bowel or rectum, but also the bladder or ureters. Digestive pain alone cannot identify where lesions are located.

At the consultation, describe pain, digestive or urinary symptoms and any relationship to your cycle. The doctor considers this information with the examination and any necessary investigations.

MRI can help identify the number and location of lesions when surgery is considered. If colon involvement is suspected, a CT colon study or more often an MR enterography may complete the assessment before surgery.

These tests do not decide on an operation by themselves. Ask the team what each image is looking for, which organs appear involved and what remains uncertain in your assessment.

Surgery can be complex when lesions affect organs such as the rectum, colon or bladder. The team weighs expected benefits and possible disadvantages according to the organs involved and your circumstances.

Bring reports and your questions to the consultation. Ask who will explain the images, what options are available and how your symptoms and any pregnancy plans affect the decision.
