My child reports no vision problem: why check both eyes?

One eye can compensate for the other. Early screening checks for amblyopia even when a child seems to see well.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

A child who reports no difficulty may still have a vision disorder. Lack of complaints does not replace scheduled medical checks or screening offered at school or through maternal and child health services.

When the two eyes do not provide images of comparable quality, the brain may favour the image from one eye. This can lead to amblyopia, in which vision in the other eye does not develop normally.

Early detection allows care while vision is still developing. Late diagnosis can leave a permanent reduction in vision; there is no need to wait until a child can read before raising a concern.

An eye that turns, involuntary eye movements or unusual head posture require an ophthalmological examination. In a child who can speak, double vision or headaches should also be reported to a doctor.

Marked long-sightedness can contribute to a squint. An ophthalmologist establishes the diagnosis and selects suitable correction; the appearance of the eyes or trying borrowed glasses is not sufficient.

Bring screening results and existing prescriptions to arrange the next step. This paediatric follow-up has its own pathway. Mon bilan prévention is for adults in specified age groups and does not replace a child’s vision assessment.
