General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.
When seizures continue despite treatment taken as prescribed, surgery may sometimes be considered. Suitability depends in part on seizure type and its impact; surgery is not automatic.
The pre-surgical assessment seeks the area where seizures begin and evaluates whether it can be removed without disability related to the procedure. Several examinations contribute to this assessment.
In specialist units, recording seizures is part of the assessment. The team compares recordings with imaging to help understand where seizures start.
Functional imaging may supplement MRI. In some cases, stereo-electroencephalography uses electrodes placed in the brain to clarify the location when the assessment requires it.
A multidisciplinary team discusses the findings. They may propose an operation or another form of care; undergoing assessment does not guarantee surgery.
Ask the team which examinations are planned, their risks and the next discussion step. Continue your medicines as prescribed and do not change them without medical advice.
