General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

A tank, pit or silo may be a confined space. Too little oxygen or toxic gases make entry dangerous, even for a brief inspection.

Before the task, ask whether entry is essential. The company needs to assess the work, the contents of the space and its surroundings, then plan suitable measures.

The procedure covers atmosphere testing, ventilation and securing energy and fluid supplies. Competent people organise these measures; they require arrangements specific to the planned task.

Clarify who watches from outside and how communication works. The entry permit is checked on site before entry; reading this article does not authorise anyone to enter.

Rescue arrangements come before the work: a suitable rescue procedure, available equipment and practical exercises. Ask how an unconscious person could be removed from that particular space.

If an accident occurs, raise the alarm through the planned procedure without entering to improvise help. Rescue in a hazardous atmosphere requires trained, practised and properly equipped personnel.
