General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.
Spirometry measures air volumes and expiratory flow rates. Arterial blood gas analysis answers a different question: it measures oxygen and carbon dioxide in arterial blood. It therefore provides information about the lungs’ ability to oxygenate that blood. The two examinations provide complementary information.
The word “arterial” matters: the measurement described by Assurance Maladie uses blood taken from an artery, rather than a usual venous blood sample. The report contains measurements specific to blood gases. The doctor interprets them in the context of your health and the other investigations.
This examination may be requested as a complement to spirometry according to your health and the information still needed. It can also form part of an investigation into persistent breathlessness, depending on the initial results. A prescription does not mean that everyone having a breathing test needs an arterial blood gas analysis.
In some respiratory diseases, blood gases help assess for chronic respiratory failure. Assurance Maladie describes this role in COPD. The name of the prescribed examination alone does not establish that complication: the doctor explains why it is requested and what its result adds to your assessment.
Ask the team whether the measurement is planned at the same appointment as the other examinations or separately, and who will explain the results. During that discussion, ask how measurements of air movement and blood gases complement each other in your situation. Follow-up with the doctor puts the results into context.
A worsening condition must not wait for the planned blood sample. Recent breathlessness without respiratory distress requires a consultation the same day. If it prevents someone from finishing sentences or occurs with blue lips or confusion, call 15 or 112 immediately. Medical assessment takes priority over the examination appointment or a prevention visit.
