A stiff or painful knee: prepare an assessment of its impact

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Knee osteoarthritis affects cartilage and other joint structures. Normal ageing alone does not establish this disease.

Describe pain, stiffness and restricted activities: walking, climbing stairs or dressing. These examples help medical assessment.

Examination also investigates other causes. Osteoarthritis visible on an X-ray does not necessarily explain pain: the doctor considers images alongside symptoms.

If osteoarthritis is confirmed, ask how to adapt activity during quiet phases or painful flare-ups. Report worsening limitation.

Seek medical care that day for very intense pain, associated fever, or a very swollen, red and hot knee.

After a serious injury, or if you cannot bear weight or walk, call 15 or 112 without delay.
