General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Sudden loss of vision in one eye or sudden double vision can be a sign of stroke: in France call 15 or 112 immediately, even if the symptom disappears. Do not wait for a scheduled rehabilitation appointment.

A red eye with reduced vision, severe pain, headache, vomiting or fever, as well as sensitivity to light, requires ophthalmology assessment the same day or an eye emergency department. The same applies after any eye injury, or if a recently operated eye becomes red and painful or red with discharge, even without pain. After a chemical splash, rinse the eye immediately and thoroughly for at least fifteen minutes, then go immediately to an eye emergency department.

Glaucoma treatments aim to lower eye pressure to limit progression. They do not restore vision already lost. Low-vision rehabilitation addresses a different question: how to make the best use of remaining vision.

An orthoptist can help you use retinal areas that still function. Describe activities that have become difficult, such as reading, moving around or leisure, to discuss suitable goals.

An occupational therapist can help adapt lighting, mark step edges and improve contrasts at home. A magnifier, enlarging device or large-button equipment can be discussed according to your needs.

Your ophthalmologist and primary care doctor can refer you to appropriate professionals. Keep your check-ups and take prescribed treatment regularly; report difficulties using it or side effects so the team can help find a solution.
