General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Glaucoma can progressively damage the optic nerve. Its open-angle form often develops without pain or an early reduction in visual acuity.

Raised eye pressure alone does not diagnose glaucoma. Some forms also occur with normal pressure.

The ophthalmologist examines the optic nerve and visual field as well as pressure. Ask what your results mean together.

If glaucoma is diagnosed, the ophthalmologist agrees follow-up checks with you. They remain useful even when you notice no discomfort.

Between appointments, note questions and everyday difficulties. Do not stop prescribed treatment without speaking to the doctor.

A red eye with sudden reduced vision or intense pain needs an ophthalmologist that day, or an emergency department.
