Changing mole or a new skin spot: what should you do?

A new or unusual skin lesion needs medical assessment. Warning signs help you seek advice, without diagnosing yourself.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Seek medical assessment promptly for a changing lesion, a persistent new skin spot or a mole that differs from the others.

Asymmetry, uneven edges, several colours and changes over time are warning signs. They do not establish a diagnosis.

Melanoma often develops on previously normal skin. Attention should therefore also include new skin lesions.

The doctor may refer you to a dermatologist, who examines the lesion and the rest of your skin to decide on further assessment.

Mention any personal or family history of skin cancer, immunosuppression or severe sunburn during childhood.

The dermatologist adjusts any monitoring schedule to your risks. A new or changing lesion should not wait for a scheduled check.
