General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

After exposure to cold, clumsiness, unusual speech or drowsiness may suggest hypothermia. In France, call 15 even if symptoms seem mild; severe hypothermia requires a call to 15 or 112.

In severe cold, reduce outdoor activities and avoid prolonged exposure, especially in the evening and at night. Adapt a planned outing to the conditions and your health.

Wear several layers, with an outer layer that protects against wind and water. Cover your head, neck, hands and feet; do not keep damp clothing on.

Maintain regular activity such as walking, without attempting strenuous or sudden exertion in the cold. Also avoid remaining exposed to cold and wind for a long time.

Do not drink alcohol to warm up before going out. It does not protect against cold and can make the body’s warning signals less noticeable.

If cold worsens symptoms of asthma, heart failure or respiratory failure, contact your doctor. The doctor can explain necessary precautions and decide whether your treatment needs adjustment.
