After a kidney transplant: why continue treatment and follow-up?

A functioning kidney transplant still requires anti-rejection medicines and regular checks. Plan their organisation with your care team.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

After a kidney transplant, the transplanted kidney may function well, but medical follow-up remains essential. Appointments check kidney function and treatment effects.

Immunosuppressants reduce the risk of rejection. They must be taken regularly as prescribed, even when you feel well.

These medicines also reduce immune defences. Follow-up looks for infections and other adverse effects so that they can be prevented or treated.

The team schedules clinical and blood tests at specific times; a biopsy of the transplanted kidney may be proposed as part of follow-up. Ask what each examination is checking.

Before any new medicine, show your complete treatment list to your doctor or pharmacist and mention the transplant. Do not change doses yourself after a troublesome effect or missed dose.

Keep the transplant centre’s contact details and your schedule of checks. Ask whom to contact if a problem arises or you have difficulty obtaining treatment, so the team can advise you promptly.
