General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.
An antiviral targets the flu virus; it is not an antibiotic. Treatment of an existing illness is not routine: a doctor may offer it in certain higher-risk situations or for severe flu.
Contact your doctor early if you are at risk of complications. Ameli highlights starting within the first two days of symptoms; HAS recommends an early decision without necessarily waiting for laboratory confirmation. Being past that point is not a reason to decide on your own against seeking care.
HAS limits the treatment role of oseltamivir in seasonal flu to people at risk or with severe illness. Evidence that it reduces serious complications remains limited: it does not guarantee rapid recovery or freedom from hospital admission.
Treating someone who already has symptoms differs from prevention after exposure in someone without symptoms. Any such prophylaxis also requires a doctor’s decision: do not take medicine intended for a relative or copy their instructions.
New breathlessness without respiratory distress needs medical assessment the same day. If breathing prevents you from finishing sentences, your lips turn blue, or confusion accompanies breathing difficulty, call 15 or 112 immediately in France; do not wait for a prevention consultation.
Antibiotics do not treat the flu virus; a bacterial complication can change the medical decision. Vaccination is preventive and does not replace assessment of a current illness. Discuss treatment of this episode with the doctor, then suitable prevention.
