Birds, pigs and flu: why seasonal vaccination remains relevant

Seasonal vaccination for exposed workers aims to reduce co-infection. It does not protect against flu of animal origin.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Seasonal flu vaccination is recommended for workers exposed to avian or swine influenza viruses. This does not establish a general obligation for the entire population.

This vaccine does not protect against flu of animal origin: it contains no avian or swine strain. The two risks need to be distinguished.

Its role is to reduce the risk of co-infection with a human and an animal virus. HAS maintains this occupational recommendation separately from H5N1 vaccination scenarios.

Protective equipment and hygiene remain necessary for exposed activities. Seasonal vaccination does not replace them; follow the prevention instructions applicable to your work.

To discuss it, describe your activity and contact with birds or pigs. Prepare vaccination dates; a recommendation does not confirm that a vaccine is available at a particular pharmacy.

Fever, cough or red eyes after a high-risk avian exposure: consult a doctor immediately and report the exposure. Limit contacts; a vaccination booking does not replace this consultation.
