General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.
Flu can worsen a chronic condition already present in an older person. It can also be complicated by another infection. Seek prompt medical advice as soon as flu is suspected rather than waiting for deterioration before calling.
Describe what has changed from the person’s usual state: tiredness, appetite, drinking, breathing and ability to manage daily activities. This practical comparison helps the professional understand the course of illness; it cannot diagnose flu remotely.
Thirst can be less noticeable in older people. A dry mouth, less frequent urination, unusual tiredness or drowsiness may suggest dehydration. Report these changes promptly; do not assume that a lack of thirst is reassuring.
Fever returning after improvement, breathlessness at rest or a decline in general condition requires prompt reassessment. Call 15 or 112 for confusion, severe breathing difficulty or blue lips.
Keep information about existing conditions and current medicines available for the medical discussion. Some medicines, including diuretics, can contribute to water loss. Tell the professional about this context so they can assess the infection and dehydration risk.
Once symptoms have been addressed, review suitable prevention, including flu vaccination. It aims in particular to reduce serious complications in vulnerable people. The Mon bilan prévention page explains the conditions of the prevention service.
