General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

An ectopic pregnancy implants outside the uterus, most often in a fallopian tube. Treatment and monitoring are organised by a medical team.

In some situations diagnosed early, methotrexate treatment may be offered. It is not suitable in every case; the doctor explains the choice and alternatives.

After medical treatment, clinical reviews and beta-hCG blood tests are needed to check that the pregnancy is resolving. Keep every appointment until the team confirms follow-up is complete.

An ultrasound may supplement monitoring. If treatment is insufficient, surgery may be necessary; one result alone does not determine the next step.

Worsening abdominal pain, faintness or worrying bleeding requires urgent assessment. Do not assume treatment has removed all risk before follow-up is complete.

Ask for the test schedule, which results to report and the number to call if symptoms occur. Discuss follow-up and any future pregnancy plans with the team.
