General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.
After surgery, in France call 15 or 112 immediately for difficult breathing with breathlessness, an abnormally fast heartbeat, sudden chest pain, faintness or loss of consciousness, or coughing up blood. These signs can suggest a pulmonary embolism.
Outside these emergencies, report unusual calf pain or swelling promptly to a doctor. Also contact the team about fever, a wound or pain that worries you; do not assume it is normal recovery.
Before going home, ask which procedure was performed and what weight-bearing is allowed. After an osteotomy, Ameli describes walking often being possible the next day in a special shoe with weight on the heel. Your surgeon will explain the rules for your foot.
The foot and toes are often swollen after surgery. To help reduce swelling, rest, elevate the foot and walk according to the instructions given. Crutches may be useful at first if the team recommends them.
The offloading shoe is often worn for three to four weeks after osteotomy; travel on foot is limited and driving discouraged during that period. Ask your surgeon to confirm your own duration and transition to a wide shoe.
Return to sport, driving and work depends on the procedure and recovery. Ask about the steps and next review; take any prescribed medicine as directed and do not stop it on your own.
