Blood in urine that clears: do you still need an assessment?

Blood in urine may come and go. No pain and clear urine afterwards do not establish what caused the bleeding.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Visible blood in urine needs medical assessment even when the episode stops. Haematuria may be intermittent and occur without fever.

This sign does not automatically mean cancer. Infection, stones and other conditions can also cause bleeding from the urinary tract.

A urine culture examination also checks red blood cells and infection. Urine cytology, when requested, looks for abnormal cells: the tests answer different questions.

Cytology without cancer cells cannot alone exclude a tumour. Depending on the assessment, ultrasound or examination inside the bladder may be needed.

Describe the colour, dates, pain and associated urinary difficulties. Also mention smoking, occupational exposures and any previous pelvic radiotherapy.

Arrange an explanation of the findings even if urine becomes clear again. Inability to pass urine or marked deterioration requires urgent medical help.
