Confirmed HFE1 haemochromatosis: why assess more than the genetic result?

After confirmed C282Y homozygosity in the HFE gene, medical assessment looks at iron overload and its consequences. The genetic result does not describe them all.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

This explanation concerns HFE1 haemochromatosis with medically confirmed C282Y homozygosity in the HFE gene. Its expression varies: the genetic result alone does not describe the amount of iron overload or which organs are affected.

At the initial assessment, the doctor reviews medical history, examines the person and looks for factors that may worsen complications, including excessive alcohol use or some liver conditions. Prepare information about known illnesses and family history.

The iron assessment includes ferritin and transferrin saturation. Ferritin provides information about iron stores, but can also rise with inflammation or chronic excessive alcohol use. The doctor interprets these tests together in the context of confirmed HFE1 disease.

Further examinations depend on severity and clinical signs. They may look for effects on the liver, pancreas, heart or bones according to the situation. A confirmed genetic result does not mean that everyone needs every one of these examinations.

To compare results over time, keep dated reports with their reference ranges and tell the prescriber about your treatments. Laboratory methods can cause a measurement to vary; ask how the prescribed checks should be organised.

Follow-up is adapted to severity and complications, with a record shared between the person and healthcare professionals. Ask what information to keep in it and whether family genetic counselling is indicated. These decisions belong with the medical team rather than a care timetable you set yourself.
